Comprehensive Household Contact Examinations Preceding Offer of Post-exposure Prophylaxis Intervention
High coverage of household contacts with thorough individual assessments conducted by trained staff are desirable both for early case detection and for correct identification of individuals suitable for single-dose rifampicin (SDR) prophylaxis. This best practice describes a project in Bangladesh that implemented step-by-step procedures for household contact exams (HCEs) and trained field staff in HCEs. Many positive outputs came from the project, including fostering good relationships among field staff, patients, and their contacts. New cases among contacts were also identified early, mostly before disability.
