1 November 2023 · Global Partnership for Zero Leprosy
Appointment of UN Special Rapporteur
The Global Partnership for Zero Leprosy warmly welcomes the appointment of Beatriz Miranda as UN Special Rapporteur on the elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy (Hansen’s disease) and their family members. She starts in her new role on 1 November. Beatriz takes over the role from Alice Cruz, and GPZL takes the opportunity to express deep appreciation to Alice for six very effective years in that role.
Beatriz is Ecuadorian, and is currently based in Mexico. She has a background in anthropology and sociology, and has been involved for many years working with marginalised people and persons with disabilities. She currently works as coordinator of the Research and the Critical Disability Studies Programme at the Institute of Critical Studies in Mexico City. The UN Special Rapporteur is an observer (and active participant) on the GPZL Leadership Team, and we look forward to engaging closely with Beatriz in the coming years and continuing to support her mandate.
