Challenging Stigma and Discrimination through Vocational Education and Employment for People Affected by Leprosy and People with Disabilities in Champa, Chhattisgarh, India

Persons affected by leprosy and/or disability face employment discrimination. The Leprosy Mission Trust India (TLMTI) and Champa Vocational Training Center (VTC) collaborated on a project in Champa, Chhattisgarh, India to sensitize employers and train persons affected by leprosy for the workplace. The methods included linkage events such as job fairs and off-campus placement camps. By challenging stigma among employers and their existing employees, as well as providing trainees with the support they needed, VTC was able to place more than 100 program graduates in new jobs. These job placements have ripple effects throughout wider society, beginning with relationships formed among employees and between the employee and employer.
