GPZL Takes Centre Stage at ILC 2025: Driving Global Action Toward Zero Leprosy
The ongoing International Leprosy Congress (#ILC2025) has provided a strategic platform for the Global Partnership for Zero Leprosy (GPZL) to reaffirm its leadership in the global quest to eliminate leprosy. More than just participating, GPZL has actively engaged stakeholders, shared critical insights, and demonstrated the strength of its partnerships and programs.
At the heart of the congress is the vibrant GPZL Exhibition Booth, a hive of activity and a magnet for delegates. Eye-catching and informative, the booth features a wide array of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials, including newsletters, the Best Practice Toolkit, and other key resources designed to help delegates engage deeply with the zero-transmission discourse.

Understanding the power of informal engagement, GPZL added a fun and interactive element to the booth: the selfie corner. This creative space has drawn delegates of all ages and backgrounds, becoming a symbol of solidarity in the fight against leprosy. Far beyond just snapshots, the selfies have become visual affirmations of support for a world free from leprosy, proving that a simple picture can carry a powerful message.
GPZL’s influence extends beyond the exhibition floor. The organization is leading multiple sessions and presentations throughout the congress. On the first day, Dr. Ritu Ghosh chaired a Scientific Parallel Discussion, where technical experts explored the application of science in ending leprosy. Dr. Ghosh also presented GPZL’s strategic pathway, highlighting its collaborative approaches with partners and people affected by the disease.
Mr Amar Bahadur Timalsina from GPZL Nepal, shared a presentation on the Patient Checklist Assessment conducted by the organisation across multiple leprosy high endemic countries as GPZL takes the congress as a strategic opportunity share key lessons from its programs in order to strengthen advocacy.
On the second day, GPZL President Dr. Peter Steinmann opened the plenary session with a compelling presentation on the Practical Application of SDR-PEP Implementation as a Cornerstone to Transmission Interruption Projects. His address underscored the importance of Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) in halting the spread of leprosy and reinforced the organization’s commitment to evidence-based interventions.

As ILC 2025 continues, GPZL is set to lead additional sessions, deepening the discourse and reinforcing its mission to end Hansen’s disease. Following the congress, attention turns to the GPZL Members’ Assembly, another important event for the partnership.
What a time, what a conference, and what a moment for GPZL and its partners.
Leprosy can be controlled, it can be treated, and with collective resolve, it can be eradicated.
