Leprosy/NTD Clinics in an Integrated Health Set-up

When doctors see leprosy patients alongside general patients, they may lose leprosy expertise, misdiagnose patients, and fail to follow-up. Nepal’s Lalgadh Leprosy & Health Services Centre (LLHSC) designated a leprosy consultation room under ethical considerations to avoid health-related stigma. Medical officers on rotation and a team of specialized supervisors and counsellors then oversaw the management of leprosy at the clinic. LLHSC found that with a dedicated leprosy consultation room, doctors could build both leprosy clinical expertise and their confidence in managing leprosy complications. In turn, leprosy patients benefited from shorter wait times and improved follow-up.
