Reduction of Stigma through Community-Based Inclusive Development (CBID) Practices, Nepal

Community-wide stigmatization can result in self-stigma and lack of income opportunities for persons affected by leprosy. The Leprosy Mission (TLM) in Nepal revised previous community-based rehabilitation (CBR) projects with a community-based inclusive development (CBID) approach to address the psychosocial and economic effects of leprosy. TLM involved persons affected by leprosy in addressing holistic needs and community integration through Participatory Rural Appraisal and the formation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs). This CBID approach resulted in improved WASH practices and economic well being, increased involvement in social activities, and advocacy for persons affected at the community level.
